“Death of Another Hall County Soldier of Influenza”

Wood River, Neb., Oct. 8 – Word was received here today of the death of Private Charles Allen Benson, son of Mrs. Helmer Benson, which occurred at Camp Hancock, Augusta, Ga., last night at about 10 o’clock after a week’s illness from pneumonia, resulting from an attack of Spanish influenza. Word of his serious illness was received by relatives late last week and his mother and a brother departed at once for Camp Hancock to be at his bedside. Death, however, ensued before their arrival there at 8 a.m. today. Private Benson left here with a draft contingent of September 5th last for Camp Grant, Ill. Later, however, he was transferred to the southern camp and had been there about two weeks. He was about 27 years of age, single, and previous to entering the service was engaged in farming.

He is survived by his mother and two brothers, Imer Benson and Kirk Benson. His father preceded him in death several years ago. The remains will be brought to Wood River for interment and are expected to arrive some time Thursday.
