LeRoy V. Bilslend, 96, of Shelton, died Monday, November 27, 2017, at CHI Good Samaritan Hospital, Kearney.
Services will be 1:00 p.m. Thursday, November 30, 2017 at Apfel Funeral Home, Wood River, with the Rev. Darrell Holzinger officiating. Burial will be in Wood River Cemetery, Wood River, Nebraska. Apfel Funeral Home in Wood River is in charge of arrangements.
LeRoy Vernon Bilslend was born June 6, 1921 in Stanford, Montana the son of Elmer L. & Ethel E. (Blackman) Bilslend. He received his education in Wood River, graduating from Wood River High School with the class of 1939.
LeRoy was united in marriage to Helen Brown, January 12, 1942. He entered the United States Army October 22, 1942, where he served in Germany during World War II receiving his honorable discharge January 31, 1946. The couple returned to Wood River to farm where they resided all of their life.
He was a member of the VFW and a 73 year’s plus member of the American Legion, District 14 & 5 School boards, 4-H leader and founded the Cameron Huskies 4-H Club.
His hobbies included woodworking, crafts, gardening and going to auctions. LeRoy and Helen enjoyed square dancing and belonged to two square dancing clubs.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Helen Bilslend of Shelton, four sons & daughters-in-law, Stanley E. & Donna Bilslend of Wood River, NE, Elmer L. Bilslend of Tecumseh, NE, William H. & Linda Bilslend of Cozad, NE, Jerome K. & Dotty of Wood River, NE, two daughters & sons-in-law, Judy K. & Lyle Beck of Grand Island, NE, Janet K. Berry of Osceola, NE, 17 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandson, Brian Bilslend, brothers, Loren & Harold; and sister, Lucile Robinson.
