WOOD RIVER — Mary Desel, 91, of Wood River died Thursday, June 11, 2015, at Good Samaritan Society in Wood River.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Apfel Funeral Home in Wood River, with Derek Apfel officiating. Private family burial will be at a later date in the Wood River Cemetery.
Mary was born May 9, 1924, in rural Ord, the daughter of Ira Devillo and Ethel (Kasson) Fish. She grew up in Ord, graduating from Ord High School in 1942. She then attended Kearney Normal School and taught school in Rural Valley County.
Mary was united in marriage to Maynard Desel on July 3, 1948, at Grand Island. They lived in Ord before moving to Wood River, where Mary worked at the local grocery store and also at the Cornhusker Ammunition Plant near Alda.
Mary is survived by her husband, Maynard, of Wood River; a daughter and son-in-law, Susan and David Guzinski of Cairo; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Gordon and Dee Desel, Dean Desel, Bradley and Sherry Desel, all of Wood River, and Darin and Julee Desel of Castle Rock, Colo.; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; a sister, Mildred Hoobler; and a brother, Harold Fish.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Darrel Fish and Richard Fish; and sisters, Dorothy Wallace and Karen Fish.
