WOOD RIVER – Ruth M. Engel, 96, of Wood River died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2013, at Good Samaritan Society in Wood River.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Apfel Funeral Home in Grand Island, with Pastor Darrell Holzinger officiating. Burial will be in the Wood River Cemetery.
Mrs. Engel was born June 8, 1916, on a farm south of Alda, the daughter of John and Mary (Carstensen) Layher. She attended District 24 school in Hall County. She was united in marriage to Earl H. Engel on Feb. 11, 1942, in Grand Island. The couple made their home for a short time in California and Colorado while her husband, Earl served in the United States Army. He preceded her in death on Jan. 10, 1967, at that time she moved to Wood River, and later to Good Samaritan Society in Wood River on July 22, 2009.
Survivors include one sister, Alice Uhrich of Wood River; and two grandsons, Russell Engel and Randy Engel.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Earl Engel, two sons, Larry and Harry, two sisters, Elsie Flannery and Helen Knick, three brothers, Frank Layher, Lester Layher and John Layher, and one grandson, Robert Engel.
