Nancy S. Jack, 79, of Wood River, died September 10, 2017, at Good Samaritan in Wood River after a brief illness. Memorial service will be 11:00 AM Thursday, September 14, 2017, at Wood River United Methodist Church with Pastor Trudy Hanke. Private family burial will be at a later date in the Wood River Cemetery. Apfel Funeral home is in charge of the arrangements.

Nancy Sue was born November 12, 1937, to Mervin and Mary (Robinson) Deck in Franklin, NE. She was the second of three daughters. The family moved to Red Cloud, NE, for several years before settling in Elwood, NE. Nancy graduated from Elwood High School in 1955, and attended the Nebraska State Teacher’s College in Kearney to earn her teacher’s certificate. She returned to college after her children were school-aged, and earned a bachelor’s degree in English at Kearney State College.

Nancy taught kindergarten for two years in North Platte. She married Gary “Joe” Jack on June 15, 1958. They had four children: Gary, Jr., Greg, Michelle, and Melanie. Nancy and Joe lived in Spencer, NE, Farragut, IA, and Elm Creek, NE, before moving to Wood River in 1971, where she lived the rest of her life. She taught high school English for several years, had a ceramic shop out of her home, and was the director of the Maltman Memorial Library. Nancy retired from the library in 2012, after 27 years.

Nancy had many talents over her lifetime. She sang for weddings and funerals in her younger years. She loved crafts of all kinds. Nancy sewed clothing and made quilts for many years. Nancy loved to read. She could read a book in a day. After retiring from the library, her bigger concern was having enough books to read. Nancy also had a love for cats, which began in her childhood years. She had a cat or two at all times throughout her life.

She is survived by husband of 59 years: Joe; children: Greg (Pam) of Omaha; Michelle Jack of Hastings; Melanie Jack of Topeka, KS; grandchildren: Micke’l Pfeifer, Janek Pfeifer, Breanna Seltmann, Grayson Pfeifer, Christian Pfeifer, Melisa Jack, and triplets Sarah, Amanda, and Brooke Jack; sister: Cynthia Einspahr of Longmont, CO.

Nancy was preceded in death by her parents; son: Gary; sister, Dianne Wilken; and great granddaughter: Faith Pfeifer.
