Wood River, Neb., June 13 – The Rev. Fred Hampton Johnson, retired Methodist minister who had made his home in Wood River since last June, died Saturday after an illness of several weeks. He was 72 years of age. His last pastorate was at Callaway before his retirement last June. He had served as a minister in the Methodist church of Nebraska for 43 years at Lewellen, Sutherland, Hershey, Mason City, Phillips, Edgar, Henry, Farnum, Wood River and Harrison. He had also been active in evangelistic work.
He was born at Ottumwa, Ia. Aug. 12, 1876, the son of Manson and Mary Johnson, and was married to Bertha Gilman Feb. 21, 1898. The couple had seven children.
Surviving are his wife; one son, Paul, Wood River; five daughters, Mrs. George Swanson, Crawford, Mrs. George Ponton of Elgin, Mrs. Howard Hehnke of Caspar, Wyo., Mrs. Alvin Dunkle of Edgar and Mrs. Matt Lacy of Harrison; one sister, Mrs. Ella Carroll, North Platte; two brothers, John of Manhattan, Mont., and Bert of North Platte; 17 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held in Wood River Methodist church tomorrow afternoon at 2 o’clock. Dr. Roy Spooner, district superintendent of the Kearney district, will officiate.
