Mary Ann Mead, 97, of Grand Island died April 25, 2022, at Azria Health at Broadwell. Funeral service will be 10:00 AM Tuesday, May 3, 2022, at Apfel Funeral Home in Wood River. The Reverend Terry Boshart will officiate. Burial will follow at the Wood River Cemetery.
Mary was born on April 24, 1925, in Burwell, NE to Everett and Sadie (Hodgson) Allen. She grew up in Burwell until the family moved to Joy, MO. In her later teen years, she moved back to Wood River and worked at the Ordnance Plant where she met the love of her life.
On February 1. 1945, Mary was united in marriage to Clyde Mead in Smith Center, KS. The couple lived in Wood River, Denver, St. Paul, NE, and then moved to Grand Island in 1981.
Mary was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Grand Island, the Eagles Club, Saddle Club, and received a plaque for being the oldest member of the Kearney VFW Axillary. Her hobbies included hunting and fishing and archery.
Survivors of the family include daughter, Carol Cordray of Fort Walton Beach, FL; grandchildren: Michelle Smith of Golden, CO and Katherine Lyons of Fort Walton Beach, FL; great grandson, Tyler Smith of Denver, CO; and special niece, Vicki Mead Wodrich of St. Libory, NE.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clyde in 2009; brothers: Ethan, Carl, Charles, Earl; and sisters: Lois, Elsie, and Mae.
