WOOD RIVER – Funeral services for Mrs. Nettie Rounds, 92, a native of wood River, will be held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Apfel Funeral Home in Wood River. The Rev. Dwight mason will officiate at the services. Burial will be in the Wood River Cemetery and visitation is scheduled for Tuesday evening from 7 to 9. Mrs. Rounds died Saturday afternoon at a Grand Island rest home where she had resided for about a month.
She was born Feb. 1, 1875 to Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Burkerd at Wood River and spent her girlhood and attended school there. On June 24, 1896, she married Edwin Rounds at Wood River where the couple engaged in the furniture and mortuary business. In 1941 they purchased a merchantile business in Emerson, Iowa, where they lived for a short time before returning to Wood River.
Mrs. Rounds was a member of the Rebekah Lodge and Methodist Church in Wood River and was active in civic affairs until failing health caused her retirement. In later years the Rounds traveled extensively and collected antiques, many of which are on display at the Stuhr Museum and the House of Yesterday.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Laurene Alexander of St. Helena, Calif., and Mrs. Genevieve Lyhane of Wood River; five grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents; one infant daughter; a twin sister, Mrs. Nellie Hooten; one brother, Fred Burkerd; and her husband.
