Death of Old Citizen.
Wood River, July 4 – Thomas J. Smout died very suddenly at his home in Wood River yesterday afternoon from a stroke of apoplexy. Mr. Smout was one of the early settlers in western Hall county, coming here in an early day and has since made his home. He leaves a wife and daughter, besides many friends to mourn his departure. His sudden death threw a pall of gloom over the town. He had been working in the hay fields all day, and came home late in the afternoon to rest. He had scarcely seated himself in a chair when he was stricken and death came before physicians could reach his side. He was past sixty years of age and served as a soldier in the civil war. He was one of Wood River’s foremost citizens and took an active part in the affairs of the village. The funeral was held Sunday at the home at 3 o’clock by Rev. J. C. Irwin of the Presbyterian church. The remains were laid to rest in the Wood River cemetery.
