Snider, Kenneth Harold

TERLTON, Okla. — Kenneth Harold Snider, 72, died peacefully at home Aug. 11, 2017, with his son, Leland Bender and daughter-in-law, Nancy, by his side, after his battle with leukemia.

Kenneth was born Sept. 18, 1944, to Ernest Elvin and Esther (Zimmerman) Snider.

In November 1962, he was drafted into the Army, with basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.; and AIT at Fort Knox, Texas. In 1963, he was stationed at Ferris Barracks ­– Erlangen, Germany. In 1976, his rank changed from mechanic to forward observer.
In 1984, at Fort Hood, Texas, he earned various medals including Golden Saber 14, shooting medals and expertise in artillery. In 1990, he was medically discharged.

In 1967, he married the love of his life, Ethel Richhart.

He attended fire support school in 1982. In 1983, he moved to Tulsa, Okla., and worked as a farm and truck mechanic. In 1991, he moved to Dannebrog and went into mechanic business with his brother, David Snider. He also worked as a farmhand for Jerry Obermiller in Farwell, before moving to Fairbury in 1995, where he enjoyed woodworking projects to sell at consignment shops.

In 2009, he went to work to deliver newspapers for the Grand Island Independent until 2015. 

Due to ill health, he then moved to Terlton, Okla., to be with his son.

Survivors include sisters, Millie Weavers, Marilyn (Wayne) Rice, Carolyn (Charles) Newberry, all of Grand Island; brothers, David (Paula) Snider of Dannebrog and John Snider of Grand Island.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Frederick Snider, and sister, Lucy Fegter-Peterson.

Gravesite services, with honor guard, will be Sunday, Sept. 3, at 2 p.m. at Wood River Cemetery, with internment of his ashes.
