Cotton spinner in England. He came to America in 1834 and continued as a cotton spinner in New York. He later moved to Wisconsin and engaged in agricultural pursuits. When the Civil War broke out he gave instruction to the bugler of the Third Wisconsin Cavalry

Died, near Wood River in Hall county last Saturday, Jan. 30th, Wm. Whitehead, Sr., father of Fred and Irving Whitehead, aged 81 years, 8 months. Funeral took place at residence of Fred Whitehead at 1 o’clock p.m. Monday, Feb 1st, the remains being interred in Wood River cemetery.
