Gene Allen Glasser, 87, of Grand Island died Thursday, March 13, 2014, at Grand Island Good Samaritan Society.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at All Faiths Funeral Home, with the Rev. Philip Sloat officiating. Military honors will be provided by United States Army and Grand Island Veterans Honor Guard. Private inurnment will be at a later date in Wood River Cemetery.
Mr. Glasser was born Aug. 31, 1926, in Polk to Ira and Victoria (Nelson) Glasser.
Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Charleen Glasser of Fairborn, Ohio, James and Debora Glasser of North Platte, and Richard and Tina Glasser of Cairo; a daughter and son-in-law, Christy and Manuel Rivera of Grand Island; a brother and sister-in-law, Wayne and Dolores Glasser of Madison; and two sisters and a brother-in-law, Betty Jackson of Lincoln and Jane and Jim Hanley of Casper, Wyo.; and 10 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Viva, in 1995; son, William Glasser in 1976, and granddaughter, Amy Nicole Glasser.
Gene grew up and received his education in Polk. He entered the United States Army December 1944, serving during WWII and was honorably discharged in 1946.
Gene was united in marriage to Viva Louise Richardson on March 25, 1949. The couple made their home in Wood River. Gene was employed by the Union Pacific Railroad for 43 years. He was a member of the Wood River Methodist Church.
Gene’s enjoyments included camping, gardening, wood working, painting and music. He also loved to travel.
