Douglas A. Halsted died peacefully at his home in Surprise, Arizona on February 15, 2021. He was 83 years old.

Doug was born in Burlington, Colorado to the late A.V. and Lois Halsted. He graduated from Hastings College in Hastings, Nebraska with degrees in Chemistry and Biology. Doug then moved to Evanston, Illinois where he received both a masters degree and Ph.D. from Northwestern University in Science Education. Doug worked as a high school chemistry teacher at Evanston Township High School from 1959 to 1997. Additionally, starting in 1983, Doug worked summers at Northwestern University teaching as part of the Center for Talent Development program. He also ran a small business called Halsteducate Company selling space-filing orbital model kits he had developed to high school and college science programs around the world. During his career he received many local, state and national honors for his contributions to science education. Upon his retirement he moved to Surprise, Arizona where for many years he taught adult education courses on astronomy to groups of fellow retirees.

Doug is survived by his son, Marc Halsted, and daughter-in-law Lily; his son, Kier Halsted; his daughter, Amy Halsted; and his four grandchildren: Lyla Halsted (wife of Hal Cooper), Matthew Halsted, Jacob Halsted and Courtney Alexander. Doug was preceded in death by his wife, Marna Halsted, and son, Brent Halsted.

Doug will be laid to rest next to his parents, AV and Lois, at Wood River Cemetery in Wood River, Nebraska at a graveside service on Saturday, May 29, 2021 at 4:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to organizations involved in researching the causes and treatment of Parkinson’s disease.
