WOOD RIVER – Katherine “Katie” Mead, 100, of Wood River, died Saturday, Feb. 6, at Grand Island. Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Apfel Funeral Home in Wood River. The Rev. Karen Kinnerly will officiate. Burial will be in Wood River Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church in Wood River or the donor’s choice.
Mrs. Mead was born Oct. 16, 1887, in a log cabin near Hot Springs, S.D. She was the daughter of Adam and Hanna Burmood Sheeks. She traded eggs and other produce with the Sioux Indians to obtain moccasins when she was a child. In 1897 the family began an 18-month series of moves, first to Montana, then to Lewiston, Idaho, Rathdrun, Idaho, and on to La Grande, Ore., where they arrived in 1899. On July 3, 1907, she married Charlie Mead at La Grande, Ore. They moved to Wood River in 1909 to a farm southeast of town. They retired and moved into Wood River in 1938. Mr. Mead died in 1943. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church at Wood River.
Survivors include three sons, Arthur and Ronald, both of Wood River, and Clyde of Grand Island; 15 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren and 38 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, a daughter, five great-grandchildren, a brother and three sisters.
