Weltha H. Towne
Mrs. C. E. Towne, an old resident of this community, died at the State hospital at Ingleside on Monday of this week, following an illness of many months. Funeral services were held from the Presbyterian church in Wood River on Tuesday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. Montgomery, and interment was made in the Wood River cemetery.
Mrs. Towne had been in failing health for a number of years and the past few months she had been getting rapidly worse. It was finally decided to take her to the hospital at Ingleside where she could have better care than was possible in her own home and some three weeks since she was taken to Ingleside. On her arrival there she went to bed and never regained her strength enough to leave it again and on Monday she passed to the beyond.
Mrs. Towne was born in Pownal, Vermont in September 1857. On January 1, 1878 she was married to Rev. Cyrus Stone. In the spring of 1879 they came to Nebraska and were visiting at the C. E. Towne home on July 1st when a bolt of lightening struck the house killing Rev. Stone instantly. An infant daughter was born to Mrs. Stone on July 27th of the same year. The latter lived to be eight years of age.
On February 13, 1889, Mrs. Stone and Mr. Towne were married and to them were born two children, Julia, now Mrs. Charles R. Begg of Atlanta, Georgia and Cuyler Towne of New York City, who with the husband and father survive.
Mrs. Towne was a splendid wife and mother and a true christian. She had long been a member of the Presbyterian church and was a constant attendant at church services and in years past a very active worker in the church.
