The funeral service of Mrs. Waity West, who died at Hastings last Sunday, was held in the Methodist church Tuesday afternoon conducted by Rev. J. C. Irwin and the remains laid to rest in the Wood River cemetery. Mrs. West was 88 years of age at the time of her death, having been born in Oswego county, New York, September 6, 1818 [sic]. She was united in marriage to Isaac West December 14, 1849 in Kane county, Illinois. In 1856 they moved to Iowa and in 1877 the husband and father died. Three years later Mrs. West and family moved to this community where they have since resided. She united with the church in 1845 and has always been a devoted member. Nine children were born to Mr. and Mrs. West, of whom five survive to mourn the loss of a kind and loving mother. The sorrowing relatives and friends have the sympathy of the community.

Death of Mrs. West.
Wood River, Nov. 13 – Word was received last evening of the death of Mrs. West, mother of Frank West of Jackson township, at Hastings. The funeral will be held in the Methodist church this afternoon at 3 o’clock. Mrs. West was one of the pioneers of this county and has scores of friends throughout the county. She had been in poor health for a year past and has been receiving medical attendance at Hastings.

In the 1850 census for Elgin, Kane County, Illinois dated 25 August. Head of household is Isaac West, age 60 born in New York, working as a laborer and his 3rd wife Waity (Weldon), age 30, born in New York. Living with them is Waity’s daughter, by her 1st marriage, Frances Young, age 7, born in New York.
