WOOD RIVER — Bernice Florence Layher, 78, of Wood River died Wednesday, June 9, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Apfel Funeral Home in Wood River. The Rev. John McKinley will officiate. Burial will be at Wood River Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to First Presbyterian Church in Wood River, Western Hall County Good Samaritan Center or donor’s choice.
Mrs. Layher was born Jan. 31, 1921, to Frank and Christina (Molt) Engel on the family farm southwest of Grand Island. She attended Hall County District No. 77 school.
She married Lester H. Layher on Sept. 15, 1943, at Grand Island. The couple farmed near Wood River throughout their married life.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Wood River. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, crocheting and traveling.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Kenneth and Harland, both of Grand Island; one daughter, Janet (Mrs. Lyle) Broeder of Hershey; three grandchildren and one sister, Ruby Schroeder of Grand Island.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Elmer, Earl and Lester Engel and one sister, Iola Bockman.
