WOOD RIVER, Harland L. Layher, 62, of Wood River died Sunday, Dec. 14, 2008, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be Thursday at First Presbyterian Church in Wood River, with the Rev. Brad Jepsen officiating. Burial will be in the Wood River Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Apfel Funeral Home in Wood River.
Mr. Layher was born on Sept. 23, 1946, at Grand Island to Lester and Bernice (Engel) Layher.
Survivors of the immediate family include a brother, Kenneth Layher of Wood River, a sister and brother-in-law, Janet and Lyle Broeder of Hershey.
Additional survivors include two nephews and a niece, an uncle and two aunts, as well as numerous cousins.
He grew up in Wood River graduating from Wood River High School in 1964. He went to Kearney State College and was a member of Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity. He graduated from Kearney State College with a Bachelor of Science in 1967.
He enlisted in the United States Army on April 9, 1969 and served in the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged on Nov. 2, 1970. After his service to his country, he returned to Wood River and farmed with his father and brother until
the time of his death.
He enjoyed collecting antique John Deere tractors. He also enjoyed traveling to different countries, visiting people who had worked with the Layher family during the summers training to become farmers.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
