GRAND ISLAND – Lester Howard Layher, 82, of Wood River died Thursday, July 24, 2003, at St Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be Monday at First Presbyterian Church in Wood River with the Rev John Bartleson officiating. Burial will be at Wood River Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to Wood River Fire and Rescue.
He was born April 11, 1921, on the farm northwest of Wood River to John and Mary Anne (Carstensen) Layher.
He attended school at District 24 in Wood River and graduated from high school in 1939.
On Sept 15, 1943, he married Bernice Engel in Grand Island.
They lived on the farm northeast of Wood River. He farmed and did custom corn shelling with his brothers.
He later farmed with his sons until he retired.
He was a member of the church in Wood River and Platt-Duetsche Society in Grand Island.
He enjoyed collecting and restoring John Deere tractors and spending winters in Arizona.
Survivors include his sons, Kenneth of Grand Island and Harland of Wood River; daughter, Janet Broeder of Hershey; brother, John of Grand Island; sisters, Alice Uhrich and Ruth Engel, both of Wood River; and three
grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife; a brother and two sisters.
